As Simple As Breathing...

Do you ever think about breathing? Have you ever counted your own respiratory rate? (For the curious, it's about 12 per minute when resting, much higher after exercise). Do you ever stop to consider the wonder of the human body? You don't have to think about making your heart beat, forcing your muscles of respiration to work. We truly are "fearfully and wonderfully made."

For a very few people, breathing isn't automatic. They suffer from a disorder called "Ondine's curse," in which it is often necessary for the individual to be dependent on mechanical ventilation. True, this is a rare disorder, but its very existence brings home the lesson that there are so many things our body does that we take for granted. Matter of fact, there are many parts of our very lives that are pure blessings, but for which we may not pause to thank our Creator.

So, the next time you become aware of your own breathing (and I'll bet you're there now, after reading this), stop and take a moment to be grateful. And don't forget to breathe.

I have counted my own respiration and my cat's as well. Hers was a little high at 40-45 a minute. :-)

Patricia, since a cat's respiratory rate is normally 20 to 30 per minute, maybe your cat is scared of something. Have you been letting her read some of my novels of medical suspense?
